The Tavianis struck gold with this terrific and hugely entertaining adaptation of four Sicily-set Pirandello tales, each unfolding in a different time period, which are followed by a coda portraying the great writer himself. Tragicomic, wickedly mischievous and occasionally fantastical, this is an ambitious, atmospheric and tremendously good-humoured film and a perfect demonstration of the filmmakers’ storytelling and filmmaking prowess.
