The Tavianis tackle Shakespeare, albeit with an ultra-modern twist. A bravura blend of documentary realism and potent drama, this remarkable film shows convicted mafia and Camorra criminals, in a top security prison, rehearsing for and performing a production of Julius Caesar. Stunningly orchestrated by the Tavianis, in conjunction with theatre director Fabio Cavalli, the play resonates with the inmates’ own narratives, thus gaining a whole new relevance. Bold and brilliant, this is a late-career masterpiece.
