It’s 1966 and Rubin ‘the Hurricane’ Carter is an up-and-coming Middleweight boxer from Patterson, New Jersey, when he is arrested and convicted of a triple homicide. Years later, after publishing his autobiography, a young African American lawyer in Toronto works to overturn Carter’s wrongful sentence and uncover the racial injustice that underpinned his case. Washington gives a committed performance in Jewison’s heartfelt biopic.
