FBI agent Johnny Utah goes undercover to infiltrate a gang of Californian surfers suspected of committing bank robberies. He finds inspiration, and channels more than a little adrenaline, when he encounters Bodhi, the group’s leader – a free spirit with a penchant for extreme sports. With tight framing and kinetic handheld camera work, Bigelow plunges the audience into the heart of the conflict, while playing with genre expectations and representations of masculinity, to deliver a top-notch, white-knuckle actioner.
