Outside of the traditional structure of national institutions, Black and Asian Britons created unique artistic communities, often taking the form of collectives or commercially minded organisations, which still aimed for access to the mainstream. From Blues Parties to video distribution in Southall, each iteration of new movements existed in parallel to the mainstream, with some breaking through while others plateaued.
