Introduction
Gentrification is an increasing threat to London’s most diverse populations, particularly affecting Black, Brown and Global Majority groups as a result of the so-called ‘Opportunity Areas’, where local authorities are partnering with off-shore companies in order to ‘re-develop’ areas across London, usually where there is a very high proportion of non-white residents.
Through a dynamic blend of conversation and curated clips from compelling documentaries, the event will centre the voices and experiences of those directly affected by the city's transformation. Panelists including displaced traders from the old Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre, activists and filmmakers, will share personal insights and historical context, reflecting on how gentrification displaces long-standing residents, reshapes neighbourhoods and erodes cultural identity.
