Introduction
Discover how the revolutionary spirit of the French New Wave continues to shape modern cinema in this engaging talk. Emerging in the late 1950s, the movement broke away from traditional filmmaking with bold storytelling, handheld camerawork and a raw, emotional style. Its influence lives on in the work of Noah Baumbach (Frances Ha), Richard Linklater (Before Sunrise), Barry Jenkins (Moonlight) and many others who echo its passion for experimentation and realism.
This talk explores how pioneers like Jean-Luc Godard and Agnès Varda redefined narrative structure, blurred the line between art and life, and challenged social norms through film. By spotlighting contemporary works that carry this legacy forward, we’ll delve into the timeless relevance of the movement’s visual innovation and political edge.
Hosted by Ginette Vincendeau, Emeritus Professor in Film Studies at King's College London.
