Introduction
From doting mums and monstrous matriarchs to devoted homemakers and over bearing mothers, this talk willl look at the many ways motherhood has been represented on the screen. Ranging from socially aware depictions to emotionally rich character studies, portrayals of motherhood can run the gamut between tender and familiar and complex, conflicted and wildly exaggerated. Whether it’s a character quietly holding a family together, or one unraveling under the weight of it all, this event will explore how moving images have shaped – and continue to shape – our collective understanding of what it means to be a mother.
Hosted by Nadia Maria Oliva, film & culture programmer, writer and interviewer.
