Introduction

A major international colour production from the acclaimed Filipino auteur, Magellan is a fascinating portrait of the titular Portuguese navigator and explorer, impressively portrayed by Gael García Bernal. Covering 16 years of Portugal’s activities in the Philippines, the film compellingly depicts the insidious nature of colonialisation. Sumptuously shot, Diaz’s retains his formal rigour for this historical study, but it’s far more accessible than his previous works.
