Introduction

Celebrate the power of Black identity through poetry in this creative writing workshop, inspired by the photography of Kwame Brathwaite. As a key figure in the Black Is Beautiful movement, Brathwaite’s striking images uplift Black pride, natural beauty and cultural strength, offering powerful messages for poetic reflection.

In this session, we’ll study selected photographs and invite participants to respond with their own words. Whether you’re new to writing, or a seasoned poet, this session is about expressing yourself and connecting with Brathwaite’s beautiful images. It’s a chance to explore, reflect and share what inspires you about the beauty and strength captured in Brathwaite’s work.

In partnership with Poetic Unity, a Black-led charity that empowers children and young people to thrive through poetry-based education, employment, social justice and mental health support across the UK.
