This uncensored and extraordinary documentary details the work of an unorthodox Belgian judge. It is not for the faint-hearted. By turns jaw-dropping, hilarious and disturbing, Jean Libon and Yves Hinant’s film follows Judge Anne Gruwez as she tackles gruesome murders, domestic violence and other sordid cases. She also looks to older crimes, reopening the cold case of a brutal murder of two prostitutes. No details are spared – we see pictures of savage murders, hear a mother coldly recounting an act of infanticide and listen to a dominatrix detailing particularly graphic sexual practises. There’s even an exhumation. Through it all, Gruwez displays a no-nonsense attitude, a sharp tongue and wicked sense of humour. For the Francophiles, So Help Me God was made by the team behind Strip Tease, the incredible 1980s Belgian TV sensation.
