Renowned for his searing social commentary, Nabil Ayouch’s bold and lyrical ensemble drama reflects on the violence of not being true to yourself. When educational reform is imposed across Morocco in 1982, a beloved local teacher in a remote Berber-speaking village in the Atlas Mountains cannot bear to teach children in Arabic – a language they don’t understand – and is quickly replaced. This is one of five interconnecting stories through which Ayouch frames present-day Casablanca, Morocco’s bustling economic capital. He weaves together the lives of a Jewish piano-playing bar owner, an affluent teenager whose single mother is endlessly absent, a young musician who worships Freddie Mercury – much to his father’s disdain – and a bored housewife who is silently controlled by her husband. In the shadow of Michael Curtiz’s eponymous Hollywood classic and the glossy veneer of the dream it promised, Razzia simmers with social tensions.
