Hushpuppy is a 6-year-old girl living on her wits in the Bathtub, a remote southern delta community surviving in ramshackle abodes, cut off from everywhere else by an expansive levee. Her mother has long deserted her, and her father Wink spends his time drinking to forget their impoverished circumstances. With a fierce storm raging and Wink falling ill, Hushpuppy has to face the Bathtub disappearing under rising water and the pre-historic creatures that have been unleashed from melted ice-caps charging across the planet. Beasts of the Southern Wild has been celebrated at Sundance and Cannes this year, winning the Grand Jury Prize and the Caméra d’Or at those respective festivals. Featuring remarkable performances from a cast of non-actors, Benh Zeitlin has delivered a debut feature that is a visually ravishing and bold achievement, a brilliant, distinctive vision of life on the edge of the world.
