Seven years after a shocking murder, a killer strikes once again in the town of Martfü. Is it a copycat crime? Or is the wrong man in jail? Based on the true story of the Monster of Martfü, this chilling serial-killer drama uses a notorious murder spree of the late 1950s/early 1960s to paint a wider picture of Hungarian society. Though graphic and disturbing – the victims are all women and the murderer’s appetite for sexual violence is never soft-pedalled – director Árpád Sopsits moves on from the crimes and their impact to examine justice in the post-war Communist era. Though by no means as open-ended, like David Fincher’s Zodiac or Bong Joon-ho’s Memories of Murder – against which Sopsits’ film more than holds its own – Strangled shares an interest in obsession and investigation, a story of the pursuit rather than the pursued.
