The true story of Billy Moore, a British drug-dealer sent to a violent Thai prison, where he learns kick-boxing as a means to survive. Last seen at the LFF with the harrowing Liberian child-soldier drama Johnny Mad Dog, Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire returns with an equally powerful story of survival in extreme circumstances. Based on the memoir by Liverpool-born Billy Moore, A Prayer Before Dawn stars Joe Cole as an ex-pat methamphetamine dealer who is arrested in Bangkok and sentenced to three years in one of Thailand’s most notorious prisons. The horrors of the conditions in this prison are not glossed over, but Sauvaire handles his subject with respect and sensitivity, whether he’s detailing the vicious honour codes of Thailand’s tattooed gangsters or depicting Moore’s tender friendship with a transgender murderer. Immersive and sensory without being sensationalist, Sauvaire’s film is a passport into a dark, dangerous and little-seen world.
