Person to Person

A cinematic breath of fresh air, this New York City ensemble drama is like 1970s Robert Altman seen through a distinctly 2017 lens.

Sales Celluloid Dreams

New York, late summer, early autumn. A vinyl-collecting dude gets a tipoff of a rare Charlie Parker record for sale and cycles over to check it out... Rookie reporter Claire (Abbi Jacobson, Broad City) finds her first day on a tabloid newspaper edgier than expected. She’s being mentored by Phil (Michael Cera), a reporter keen on quoting (his own) heavy metal lyrics. Jimmy (Philip Baker Hall) passes his time in his watch-repair shop, while Wendy (Tavi Gevinson) navigates the tricky terrain of being a teen. An Altman-esque tapestry, Person to Person is both 1970s retro and very contemporary, unassumingly charming and thoroughly cine-literate. Joy and grace might be uncommon qualities in independent filmmaking, but they flow out of Dustin Guy Defa’s observational comedy drama. And there’s a respect for all things analogue (vinyl, clockwork, newspapers), which chimes with Ashley Connor’s 16mm cinematography, in this loving tribute to a city and living one’s life with integrity.
