Writer-director Lang made her mark with 2016’s idiosyncratic Baden Baden, and returns with this keenly-observed look at the domestic realities that are the flip side of the Foreign Legion myth. Set around a Legion base in Corsica, it focuses on young Nika, newly arrived from Ukraine to join her legionnaire boyfriend. There’s also Céline (Camille Cottin, from Call My Agent!), a lawyer married to new commander Maxime (Louis Garrel). Lang draws on her own experience in the army to evoke the conflict, commitment and social pressures of Legion life, for soldiers and partners alike. At its centre, Nika is superbly played by Ina Marija Bartaite, whose tragic death earlier this year ended what would surely have been a stellar career.
