This spectacular documentary, a mind-blowing symphony of images and sound, chronicles the powerful attraction mountains hold over us. Following her Grierson Award-winning documentary Sherpa (LFF2015), director Jennifer Peedom returns with a breathtaking new project. Not necessarily for the faint-hearted, the film carries you up the vertiginous heights of the world’s great mountains, exploring how they have fuelled our imagination with passion and fear for centuries. Peedom combines archive footage of early mountaineers with majestic shots of the peaks, the daredevil climbers who scale them and lovers of extreme sports. The result is a thoughtful and thoroughly cinematic account of humanity’s desire to scale these heights. Narrated by Willem Dafoe, who reads an evocative text by Robert Macfarlane and adorned with a grandiose score by the Australian Chamber Orchestra, this guaranteed adrenaline rush almost makes you feel like you’re there.
