Algerian director Narimane Mari’s lustrous triptych, a pointed reflection on colonial power and the ideological underpinnings of modern day migration, defies classification. Building on the groundwork laid by the radical and playful Bloody Beans, Mari’s second feature is a wide-ranging and pointed exploration of colonial power and its legacy. Three distinct sections fuse reenactments based on French colonial military reports in North Africa – a lush island utopia merging languages and cultures – and interviews conducted with Greek analysts reflecting on present-day migration. Whilst visually striking tableaux play out to a rich and layered soundscape, Mari draws specific attention to the weight of words. In merging past and present, she underlines the power of semantics in our understanding of history, representation and their meaning in today’s realities. Having premiered at documenta 14, Le Fort des Fous establishes Mari’s playful, inquisitive, classification-defying style as a vital and distinctive voice.
