An edgy US indie about a kidnap victim who decides to remake the one TV show he obsessed over during his abduction. Brigsby Bear was a homemade children’s TV series featuring a heroic, man-sized teddy who offered unusual advice (‘Curiosity is an unnatural emotion’) to an audience of just one – James. Unexpectedly liberated from the desert bunker owned by his ‘parents’, with his beloved screen icon’s show abruptly ended, emotionally stunted James is adrift in the wider world. But what if he were to reboot ‘Brigsby’ himself? A testament to creativity as survival instinct, Saturday Night Live alumni director Dave McCary and co-writer/lead actor Kyle Mooney navigate their subversive balancing act (imagine Room crossed with Be Kind Rewind) with wit and warmth. It also features Claire Danes, Greg Kinnear and Mark Hamill in a rare non-Star Wars role that most definitely embraces the dark side.
The screening on Wed 4 Oct has an audio-description soundtrack for customers who are blind or partially sighted. Headphones are available on request.
