The sophomore feature from the director of horror/western Bone Tomahawk is another genre-bending, bone-crunching exercise in slow-burn suspense. Vince Vaughn plays Bradley, a former boxer-turned-mechanic at a crossroads in his life. With his marriage on the rocks and his career well and truly in the gutter, he teams up with an old acquaintance for a stint as a drug courier. But while his risky new venture proves initially lucrative, a drug deal gone wrong sees him behind bars and set to face his toughest, most dangerous assignment yet. As he proved with his uncompromising debut, there is no other filmmaker quite like S. Craig Zahler working today, and this visceral prison thriller presents another subversive and idiosyncratic take on a seemingly familiar genre. Be warned, the squeamish might want to look elsewhere. But for those made of sturdier stuff, this is one stretch well worth your time.
