Introduction

In recent years, the representation of animals in both documentary and fiction films has become more complex. Through a range of forms and styles, cinema has reached beyond the confines of human experience to explore animal subjectivity and perspective. This year’s BFI London Film Festival programme presents a rich selection of animal films. This panel discussion will consider the place of animal protagonists and animal worlds in contemporary cinema and culture. Beyond mere romanticism and in our age of ecological reckoning, we consider what the cinematic animal might have to say about the shared fate of both human and non-human creatures?
