In 1997, Ronald Dominique began a decade-long killing spree, during which time he raped and murdered 23 men in the Bayou Blue area of Houma, Louisiana. Despite being one of the most prolific serial killings in recent history, the case was almost completely ignored by the media, overshadowed by the disaster of Hurricane Katrina, and perhaps relegated to a mere journalistic footnote due to the fact that the murders took place in such an impoverished community. Years on, and Dominique’s story has remained surprisingly overlooked. In their atmospheric documentary, directors Lambert and McMahon revisit the scenes of the crimes, weaving recordings of Dominique’s police confession among recently filmed interviews with the victims’ families and those who worked on the case, with devastating effect. Presented with arresting candour and intelligence, Bayou Blue comes with a visual style that chillingly evokes a tone of genuine sadness perfectly fitting the subject matter.
