Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern give career-defining performances as Sailor and Lula in Lynch’s violent, sexy and surreal road movie. They’re lovers on the run from a hitman hired by Lula’s ‘wicked witch’ mother. With liberal references to The Wizard of Oz and Elvis, this 1990 Cannes Palme d’Or winner is utterly original and, yes, as wild as Sailor’s beloved snakeskin jacket.
