A ghostly train journey on a forgotten branch line transports a man visiting his dying father in a sanatorium to the edge of a mythic forest. Experience the magic of The Quay Brothers’ third feature – a tale told through puppet animation and live-action, inspired by the book The Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass by Bruno Schulz, on the UK’s largest screen.
Following this special screening will be an in person Q&A with directors the Quay Brothers.
Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass was made with the support of the BFI, awarding National Lottery funding.
The film had its World Premiere as part of the Official Selection Venice Days 2024 and its European Premiere in the Official Selection at the BFI London Film Festival 2024.
Throughout March there will be an exhibition of Quay Brothers animation artefacts – 23 of their immaculately hand-crafted puppet film sets – on display in Bloomsbury’s Swedenborg House.
This screening is part of the 23rd Kinoteka Polish Film Festival.
Waterloo Bridge (near BFI IMAX) will be closed on 7 June Sunday between 7am and 7pm.
