Victoria Page, an aspiring dancer, is transformed by Svengali producer Boris Lermontov into a prima ballerina. But her love for composer Julian Craster and the pressures of her work threaten to consume her. Newcomer Shearer, Walbrook and Goring have rarely been better than they are in Powell and Pressburger’s masterpiece, a glorious paean to dance and art, which articulately explores the dangers inherent in obsessively following one’s dreams.
