The 1998 surrealist psychological thriller stars Sean Gullette as a mathematician who becomes obsessed with searching for patterns in the universe as part of a quest for meaning. Filmed on black and white high-contrast reversal 16mm film, this directorial debut positioned Aronofsky as a distinctive voice in filmmaking that would bring further surreal and exceptional films, including Requiem for a Dream, The Wrestler, Black Swan and The Whale.

With a soundtrack featuring Massive Attack, Aphex Twin and Orbital, Pi perfectly captures a moment in time and a city that has influenced and inspired filmmakers for decades.
