About the festival
Future Film Festival 2022 takes place both in-person and online creating a hybrid festival experience designed to reach as many attendees as possible from across the UK and throughout the world.
The festival is for aspiring filmmakers aged 16 to 25 who want to progress and learn from people already experienced in film and the screen industries. We aim to connect aspiring young filmmakers with industry experts, as well as giving opportunities to meet peers, find collaborators, and build networks.
Whether you’ve just shot some footage on a smartphone, already have a couple of short films under your belt, or aspire to have a career creating screen content, BFI Future Film is the festival for you.
The festival programme has been carefully curated to help you:
- develop your storytelling and filmmaking skills
- explore your filmmaking style and different genres
- understand career pathways in the screen industry
- find career and training opportunities
- consider what next steps to take
- network and find your community
- get to know the work of other young filmmakers
- feel inspired to make your own projects!
Each day we’ll host a number of events focused on a specific area of film and the screen industries. Join us in-venue at the BFI Southbank or online for panels with industry experts, masterclasses, workshops, discussions, keynotes and interviews. This year will also see the return of our marketplace, a trade show where attendees can interact with and learn about companies and learning institutions from across the industry.
The online programme is completely free and accessible outside the UK allowing us to reach a worldwide audience for those events.
Our events programme is divided into strands covering:
- The business of film
- Career ladder
- Hot Spots, with leading industry figures
We are excited to announce our full programme of 50 short films made by filmmakers aged 16 to 25. We will be hosting screenings at the BFI Southbank and making the films available to view for free on BFI Player from Thursday 17 February until Thursday 3 March 2022.
These films were selected from submissions from 41 countries. A panel of 10 BFI Film Academy Young Programmers, all aged under 25, helped us shape the programme.
We’ll be awarding prizes in 10 categories at this year’s BFI Future Film Festival awards ceremony taking place on Sunday 20 February. These prizes are judged by industry representatives, including a high-profile jury who choose the Best Film, Best Director, and Best New Talent awards. Stay tuned for more information on the film nominations and our jury.
