The Lost Boys
Joel Schumacher’s hedonistic party vamps offer up a whole host of gay pleasures.
Intent on starting a new life, a single mother and her two teenage sons move to the Californian coastal town of Santa Carla. While younger sibling Sam busies himself with his comic books, older brother Michael falls in with a group of enigmatic young bikers who indulge in hedonistic, night-time pursuits. Noticing changes in his brother, Sam begins suspecting that rumours of vampire activity in his sleepy town might not be so far-fetched. With their dyed hair and piercings, these blood-sucking leather-boys enjoy nothing more than a night exchanging bodily fluids, while young Sam swans around in a T-shirt that reads ‘Born To Shop’ and hides pictures of male pin-ups in his closet. Directly referencing various gay subcultures, Joel Schumacher turned the queer dial up to the max with this one. Sleep all day, party all night. It’s fun to be a gay vampire.
