This fascinating portrait of pioneer pornographer Wakefield Poole explores the many roles which he would play in art and culture before and after his breakthrough feature Boys in the Sand (1971), the first feature-length explicit gay sex film. Poole’s humble origins in the Deep South didn’t seem the most likely preparation for a career that took him across the world with the Ballets Russes and on to Broadway. His filmmaking revolutionised gay sex on screen but the dizzying heights of early success saw him battle with addiction, the Aids crisis and more. He and his contemporaries bear witness to an extraordinary career and a lust for life. Newly remastered, excerpts from many of his hard-to-see films are included and the film explores his other careers in dance, musical comedy, pop art, design and performance.
