When a grouchy old academic (Sjöström, marvellous) decides to drive from Stockholm to Lund to receive an award, he little suspects that the journey – together with his unhappily married daughter-in-law – will make him reassess his family, his past and his view of life. Arguably Bergman’s warmest film, it pays tribute both to the beauty of nature and to the energetic follies of youth.
