What is a Film Musical?

Join our special guests for a discussion on the magic ingredients of a movie musical.

We are delighted to announce that BBC Asian Network’s Ashanti Omkar and academics Dominic McHugh (University of Sheffield) and Karen McNally (London Metropolitan University) will join us for this event hosted by BFI Musicals! season programmer and BFI National Archive Head Curator Robin Baker.

Total runtime 90min

Join our panel of guests to delve deeper into what makes a film musical and the role of music and dance in portraying characters, depicting emotions and structuring story on screen. We’ll ask questions such as: what are the classic conventions? Do contemporary titles like La La Land update the genre’s tradition? And how has the genre developed within the cinema of different countries?
