Bruno Dumont’s bracingly unsentimental debut is a stark, exhilarating portrait of marginalised youth to rank alongside Pialat’s L’Enfance nue. Shot with a non-professional cast in drab rural towns in Flanders, it follows epileptic teen Freddy (Douche) and his girlfriend Marie (Cottreel), who race motorbikes with their friends, fight and have sex. Then one day immigrant Kader (Chaatouf) flirts with Marie – with fateful consequences.
