The Parisian suburb of Seine-Saint-Denis provides the hard, concreted setting for Brisseau’s shocking film, which combines brutal realism with moments of tender, poetic surrealism. When neglected 13-year-old Bruno (Négret) falls in with feral Jean-Roger (Gasperitsch), who’s under the sway of his violent father, a sympathetic teacher tries to help, but the harsh realities of their environment are unforgiving.
