Rebel Without a Cause

James Dean’s finest performance was in this landmark film about disaffected middle-class teenagers in 1950s LA.

With James Dean, Natalie Wood, Sal Mineo
Certificate PG

For what would become an iconic youth movie, Nicholas Ray conducted extensive research to gain a better understanding of why kids from comfortable middle-class families might end up in trouble. While his precise, discreetly expressionist direction speaks volumes, it’s the directness of the three lead performances – especially that of the Method-influenced Dean – which provides the film’s emotional power and authenticity.

The screening on Wed 13 Nov will be introduced by film critic Thirza Wakefield.
