De Niro is at his best as boxing champ Jake LaMotta, in Scorsese’s dazzling portrait of toxic masculinity.
Dir Martin Scorsese
With Robert De Niro, Cathy Moriarty, Joe Pesci
Scorsese’s account of the rise and fall of middleweight champion Jake La Motta – a searing study of inarticulate, violent, agonised masculinity – is notable for the raw realism of its scenes outside the ring (the fights themselves are highly stylised). The sheer physicality of the mise-en-scène is matched by how De Niro famously put on weight to portray the boxer in his later years.
The screening on Wed 20 Nov will be introduced by Geoff Andrew, Programmer-at-large.
