A weekend of shore leave turns eventful. Basil Dearden’s film captures the post-war atmosphere of poverty and spiv enterprise, of packed pubs and variety entertainments – the heavy river traffic on the Thames and the car-free Sabbath streets are the converse of what we see today. Earl Cameron’s merchant seaman landing at the eponymous dock echoes his own arrival in the city in 1939. Relaxed, dapper and obliging, he brings nuance to what could be merely a cipher or a token plot device.
