This was the first film to create a Mike Leigh ‘youth cult’, with Gary Oldman’s ferocious skinhead, and a fog of defeatism rolling out from an East End council flat to a housing estate in Essex. An outstanding cast of (then) unknowns all made waves, and the film is the best sort of period piece – a vibrant dramatic account of how life really was for many unemployed, alienated youngsters, and parents, at that time.
