This ‘boy’s own’ tale of derring-do is based on the novel by AEW Mason, in which a young man is driven to prove his mettle after being branded a coward for refusing to fight in the Sudanese war. Shooting on location with unwieldy Technicolor cameras was an incredible undertaking that demonstrates Alexander Korda’s ambition and risk-taking as a producer.

The screening on Wednesday 30 January features an intro by Dr Emma Sandon, Birkbeck University of London.
