Jacques Demy’s infectiously energetic and joyous tribute to the Hollywood dance musical brings together a motley assortment of characters – ballet-teaching twin sisters and their mother, visiting carnival performers, a painter, piano-shop owner and an American composer – in a rhapsodic roundelay in search of love in a pastel-painted Rochefort. Michel Legrand’s score (arguably his finest) and Demy’s witty lyrics suggest there’s a creative urge in us all.
