Evocatively shot by novice cameraman Subrata Mitra, who famously used bounced natural light when forced into a studio, this second film follows the development of Apu as he grows up in busy Varanasi (Benares) and, later, Calcutta. His intellectual curiosity takes him through a series of doorways, away from his mother, towards a new life as an adult. The film won multiple festival awards including the Golden Lion at Venice.
