Big screen classics

Derek Jarman’s cinematic study of the famous artist boasts a fantastic cast.

UK 1986
Dir Derek Jarman
With Nigel Terry, Sean Bean, Tilda Swinton, Nigel Davenport
Certificate 18

Derek Jarman took a characteristically eccentric, iconoclastic approach to the short but dramatic life of Caravaggio, happily introducing blatant anachronisms into an unashamedly fictional narrative that alternates between scenes of his models posing for paintings with others that depict the fiery nature of his sex life and its deadly consequences. Gabriel Beristain’s burnished camerawork is fittingly chiaroscuro and elegant.
