Becker’s best-loved film is probably his masterpiece. The ‘golden helmet’ of the title refers to the blonde hair of the heroine, who leaves her criminal lover – an ‘apache’ – for an honest carpenter, with tragic results. Simone Signoret is radiant in a signature role, and Becker’s recreation of turn-of-the-century Paris is sublime both in its authenticity and its evocation of Renoir, the painter.
