A reconstruction by Filmmuseum München

This sensational silent drama, made during the early censorship-free period, warns against the perils of drug addiction and sexual debauchery. Now newly restored in gorgeous colour, it stars Werner Krauss (pre-Caligari) as a Chinese opium dealer and Conrad Veidt as a love-crazed English doctor. Its exotic scenery and brazenly erotic opium dream sequences were hailed as a triumph of the cinematic medium.
