Based on stories by actress-novelist Birgit Tengroth, this account of a troubled marriage often rings bitterly true, perhaps because it was made after Bergman’s separation from his second wife. Intriguingly, flashbacks suggest the burdensome effect of past relationships as the couple travel home from Basel by train through a Germany ravaged by war; fruitfully, Bergman mostly focuses on the wife’s point of view.
