Bold new voices emerged in the 1980s, and older work and key figures from the past were also re-examined as the appetite for experimental film – in a post-punk, politically uncertain world – grew. Of those that championed the field, Mike O’Pray who died in late 2016, was a singular figure, touring titles through the Film and Video Umbrella, and writing a regular column for Art Monthly and books for the BFI. This programme profiles artists in the order that O’Pray originally addressed them, celebrating his work whilst also proposing another way of looking at the decade. It is a story about political agitation and image interrogation and includes titles by Derek Jarman, Holly Warburton, Gorilla Tapes, Bill Viola, Kenneth Anger and Andy Warhol.
