A man attempting to escape Nazi-occupied France falls in love with the wife of a dead author whose identity he’s assumed.

Petzold’s adaptation of Anna Seghers’ 1944 novel centres on a German refugee (a mesmerising Rogowski) as he escapes to Marseille carrying the papers of a famous writer, Weidl. When he discovers that Weidl has taken his own life, he’s faced with the dilemma of whether or not to assume the author’s identity and take advantage of the transit pass he’s been issued by the Mexican embassy. When he crosses paths with the writer’s mysterious wife an obsessive desire begins that will change both their destinies. Brilliantly blurring past and present, this atmospheric film reflects the historic rise of nationalism and brings it bang up to date. A haunting film for our times.
