Based on a play by Clifford Odets, this is one of Hollywood’s most savagely critical self-portraits, as it chronicles the clash between an actor (Palance) reluctant to renew his contract, and his scheming studio boss (Steiger); Lupino plays the actor’s idealistic but disenchanted wife. The excellent cast works wonders, while Aldrich, clearly in his element, keeps things engagingly nasty throughout.
