Before breaking through with Twilight, Catherine Hardwicke co-wrote and directed this raw take on adolescence from a teen girl’s point of view. Shy student Tracy (Wood) lives with her older brother and devoted single mother (Hunter), who’s recovering from an alcohol addiction. Eager to shed her good-girl image, Tracy upgrades her look and falls in with charismatic popular girl Evie (Reed). They become inseparable and Tracy is quickly introduced to a world of sex, drugs and shoplifting, but as the girls’ behaviour becomes more excessive, Tracy shuts out her family and tries to cope by self-harming. Co-written with Reed (who was 14 at the time), Thirteen provides an incisive look at a young girl’s coming-of-age and flirtation with self-destruction.
