Douglas Sirk’s masterly melodrama – which inspired both Fear Eats the Soul and Far from Heaven – centres on the relationship that blossoms between a well-to-do New England widow and her gardener; those around them deem that differences in class, income, age and attitude make their union inappropriate. The result is a lacerating critique of the complacent conformism of postwar America, dressed in sumptuous autumnal colours.
